Job description

The Fluid Mechanics research group at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University (UGent) focuses on fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Currently, two professors, one post-doc and eleven PhD students are working on these topics with various applications in mechanical engineering. Furthermore, there are active international and internal collaborations.  In concreto, current research topic is in collaboration with the research cell on Computational Tribology, which is part of Soete Laboratory at UGent.

We are looking for a PhD student for four years to model and simulate the wire-drawing process using CFD-FSI simulations. Wire drawing is a technique to reduce the diameter of a steel wire by drawing it through a die. This process also changes the metallurgical properties of the steel wire. To reduce friction, a lubricant is applied, resulting in a thin liquid film between the wire and the die during the drawing process. A constant film thickness is crucial to obtain a constant diameter and quality of the wire. However, when the speed of the wire drawing is increased, fluctuations of the film thickness are observed in practice which need fundamental investigation such that the process can be accelerated.

This PhD is linked with Bekaert, a world market and technology leader in steel wire transformation and coating technologies.

Profile of the candidate


  • You hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering or Computational Engineering.
  • You have a strong motivation for conducting scientific research at a high level.
  • You possess good analytical and technical skills.
  • You are interested in computational mathematics and scientific computing.
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics is an asset.
  • You take responsibility for the development of your research in a well-structured, thorough way, and you are able to solve problems independently. You display creativity in solving problems, generating ideas or finding new ways of working.
  • You have an open personality and willing to contribute to the team and participate in didactic projects.
  • You have excellent communication skills in English, both orally and written.


  • The PhD position starts on 1st of January 2019 at the earliest.
  • We offer a 100% research position for 48 months (4 years). After a trial period of 6 months, a fixed-term contract will be offered on condition of positive evaluation.
  • The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The net salary for a starting PhD student (unmarried) is about €2000,- per month.
  • The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral program of Ghent University (
